Monaural

Monophonic ( from Greek μονο, mono = "one" and φονος, phonos = " sound ") means single channel in electro-acoustics.

The term is used in contrast to the stereophonic or dual-channel technology for sound recording and reproduction techniques that can get by with only one sound channel and therefore can not reproduce surround sound.

The monophonic was from the beginning of the sound recording by means of the phonograph and gramophone records until the development of stereophonic in the 1950s, the norm of Tonkonservierung. Until the 1960s, numerous records were released in parallel in a mono and a stereo mix. In the late 1960s the stereo editions had their mono counterparts largely displaced.
