In the near-shore area of Lake Mondsee in lake and Scharfling underwater remains were found of settlements and was mined a rich portfolio of fund certificates of Neolithic pottery and stone tools and bones days. They are interpreted as the remains of a pole building culture. Science has coined the name Mondsee culture after the main reference of the Mondsee. It is approximately bounded by 2800-1800 BC, and extends over the greater part of Upper Austria and Salzburg parts. Recent research has shown that it is original land settlements that were later released due to a rise in the lake level under water. The museum has an extensive Mondseeland Pfahlbausammlung.

In Roman times there was a settlement here, as evidenced by finds, and a road linked them to Juvavum, the Roman Salzburg. In 600 the Bavarians began to colonize the Mondseerland and clearing forests. 748 founded the Bavarian Duke Odilo of the family of Agilolfinger the monastery of Mondsee, which is the oldest monastery in Upper Austria. The development of this landscape was dominated from then on, both in spiritual and cultural as well as economic point of view from the monastery and left a cultural landscape with its own trains arise.

Science calls old Bavarian monasteries and especially St. Peter in Salzburg as the origin. Soon after its founding counted Mondsee to the most outstanding monasteries of Bavaria. The monastery was famous for his writing school and illumination. Even before the so-called 788 Tassilopsalter was created here. It represents the oldest complete book, which was written on the territory of today's Austria. Shortly after 800 here was the so-called Mondseer Matthew - the oldest German translation of the Bible. From 831-1106 Mondsee was owned by the bishops of Regensburg.

Until 1506 the Mondsee land belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria. Then it went into the possession of the Hapsburgs. 1791, the monastery was abolished by Emperor Leopold II. 1810 was awarded the Bavarian Field Marshal Carl Philipp von Wrede the abandoned monastery Mondsee (next Suben and Gleink ) as a castle with its own rule, Wrede remains even after the return of the territory to Austria owners and promotes the area after forces ( road construction, start the generation of the Mondsee cheese ... ).

Kloster Mondsee

The monastery of Mondsee was founded in 748 by the Bavarian Duke Odilo and won mainly by the many possessions and lands rapidly in importance. According to legend, Duke Odilo to have been at night on a mountain on the banks of Lake Mondsee on the hunt. When the moon behind the clouds came forward and lit the way, the Duke was preserved in the lake before a crash. In return for this rescue he came in from the Mondsee build a monastery. The vorbenediktinische pin soon rose to become one of the most powerful Bavarian monasteries. As in later episode Odilos son Tassilo III. in 777 founded the monastery Kremsmuenster, he already summoned monks from Mondsee foundation of his father in order to evangelize the region. After Tassilo and thus the Agilolfinger had been overthrown, the monastery of Mondsee went over to the rank of a Carolingian imperial abbey and took 800 AD, a Benedictine rule.

Especially valuable for this region is the so -called Mondseer tradition of Conduct, which is a collection of important documents and manuscripts on the history of Eastern Bavaria, Salzburg and Upper Austria. These documents include around 135 copies of documents, and rich to the middle of the eighth century AD back. When the monastery Mondsee was abandoned in 1791, all archive pieces were the Enns in Linz delivered to the filing of the country where they fell in the following years in oblivion.
