Monel

Monel, (material number 2.4360, UNS N 04400, Alloy 400, Nicorros ) also known as Monel metal, according to Ambrose Monell († 1921), is a nickel -copper alloy.

Composition

Monel is composed of about 65% nickel, 33 % copper and 2 % of iron with a high tensile strength. The situation is very resistant to atmospheric corrosion, sea water and a variety of acids and alkaline solutions. The term Monel is a protected trademark of Special Metals Corporation, Huntington (West Virginia), USA. The material is regarded as a forerunner of stainless steel and is still in use today.

Application

Monel is used in marine technology, for turbine, for equipment in the chemical and hydrocarbon industries, for valves, pumps and heat exchangers. It is remarkably stable against the aggressive fluorine F2 ( passivation of the Moneloberfläche by fluorination ) and is therefore a material for F2 - storage containers ( gas cylinders ) are used.

Monel is characterized by the high nickel content also by excellent electromagnetic shielding. Therefore, it is often used in the EMC technology in the form of fabric tubes as a screen material for electrical cables. Frequent use is also in Monel reactors, piping and valves in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Alternatives in chemical plant offer in addition to other nickel-based alloys and FRP components with a chemically resistant liner such as are from perfluoroalkoxylalkane (PFA ) lined. Since Monel also can be soldered very good, the change of perinet valves ( " Monel valves " ) are manufactured for brass instruments it sometimes.

Increasingly, use is the material due to its resistance to perspiration

  • In the production of glasses than goggles wire.
  • For marking of animals ( ear tags made of Monel, called monel tags ).
  • For wrapping plucked instruments - strings, especially with electric bass and electric guitar ( " Monel strings ").

K- Monel

In addition to classic Monel, there is the curable K- Monel ( Werkstoff. No. 2.4375 / ( 2.4374 -. Aerospace applications only), UNS N 05500, Alloy K -500, Nicorros Al ). This material is added to aluminum. By a special heat treatment of the material may be cured. Due to the precipitation hardening, a significant increase in strength can be achieved. This alloy is used for example as a pump in an oil pump shaft.
