Monesiglio

Monesiglio ( in Piedmontese Munisij ) is a municipality with 685 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Cuneo ( CN), in the Piedmont region. It is located 99 km south of Turin.

Geography

Monesiglio is on the top Bormidatal, on the right side of the BORMIDA di MILLESIMO. The place belongs to the Alta Langa, a promontory of the Ligurian Apennines.

Neighboring municipalities are Camerana, Gottasecca, Mombarcaro and Prunetto.

Typical Products

Monesiglio is located in the growing area of Dolcetto. The berries of the grape varieties Pinot Noir and / or Chardonnay may be processed for sparkling wine Alta Langa. In addition, as in the whole Alta Langa has the meaning hazelnut. As the cheese Tome di Langa is produced.

History

The community dates back to pre-Roman settlement of a Ligurians. To 172 BC it was the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages Monsiglione under Aleramo part of Monferrato was. In the 13th century it came to the counts of Caldera. Through the marriage of Olimpia Contessa Elisabetta Caldera with Marchese Alessandro Saluzzo Valgrana 1702 it came to the possession of the Marquis of Saluzzo.

Attractions

The Castello dei Caldera was built by the family of caldera beginning of the 13th century. Through numerous renovations in the following century, the castle received its late-Gothic appearance. 1785 it was converted to the baroque manor. In 1940 the chapel elegant frescoes were rediscovered in 1532 by Antonino Ocello as Ceva in the restoration. Worth seeing is the Sala degli Stemmi ( Wappensaal ).
