Mongane Wally Serote

Wally Serote Mongane (* 1944 in Sophiatown, Johannesburg ) is a South African writer.

Life

He was from 1974 to 1979 in the U.S., where he studied at Columbia University. After a brief return to South Africa he went voluntarily into exile in Botswana, where he was working for the ANC. In 1980 he was awarded the prize for the best South African writer, from 1983 to 1986 he was Chairman of the Department of Arts and Culture ( German about: Culture Department) of the ANC. 1986-1990 he was cultural attaché of the ANC for the United Kingdom and Europe, before returning after a total of 17 years of exile in South Africa.

In 1993 he was awarded the Noma Prize for African Writing for Third World Express.
