Semisquare acid, also called moniliformin is how the related square acid, a descendant of cyclobutene.

Occurrence

Moniliformin from Fusarium moniliforme is a secondary ( Gibberella fujikuroi ) Fusarium sporotrichioides and Fusarium fusarioides ( fruit and corn mold species ). In nature, it occurs as a potassium or sodium salt.

Chemical Properties

The semisquare acid is the most potent naturally occurring organic acid ( pKa = 0.88).

Physiological effects

Moniliformin is a mycotoxin and shows to plant toxic and growth-regulating properties. The effect is due to a disturbance of pyruvate and α - Ketoglutaratoxidation the citric acid cycle in the mitochondria. A comprehensive compilation of the occurrence and to the toxic effects of moniliformin was commissioned by the European Food Safety Authority.
