Monkey: Journey to the West

The opera with a choreography Chen Shi- Zheng was premiered on June 28, 2007 opening of the Manchester International Festival. It is a coproduction of the Manchester festivals, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. " Monkey" is a mixture of Peking Opera and modern circus, which is based on the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West.

Reviews

The premiere critics were divided. The Guardian had a hymnal criticism and one in which the author va disappointed by uninspired music in terms of its assessment showed. The audience expressed, however, exceptionally impressed.

Performances took place between 2007 and 2009 in Paris, Charleston and London. The Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden called off planned for 2008 performance. The co-production partners in Paris, the Théâtre du Châtelet, yielded no technically and artistically viable version of the elaborate stage show.
