Monkey wrench

A Frenchman is an adjustable wrench.

It is a universal hand tool for loosening and tightening of bolted connections. By turning the handle of the distance between the two jaws can be adjusted continuously. Thus, it can be used for different sized four-or even-numbered polygons (6, 8, 10 ... ), eg for square nuts or bolts may be used as well as different unit systems (metric and imperial) and after proprietary company standards.

The difference with the British is that the mouth is present on both sides. Thus you can clamp a second mother to the same size in the opposite jaw and so, without bending the Rotate tool in more strongly fixed screws. The Englishman has, however, in confined premises benefits.

But he is by freely adjustable key width is still a useful tool for older and larger screw.

Like the English, it can be used to slide the key head and damage the screw come when the bowl size is not set correctly. Plug or ring spanner with a profile that acts on all flanks of the screw head can transmit greater torques as adjustable wrench, the only attack on two sides. The latter, however, offer advantages when the dimensions of the screw head (or the mother), for example, do not correspond by pitting standard dimensions.

The Frenchman is mapped to the German traffic signs for roadside assistance (No. 359).
