Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company

The Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company (MR & C) was a railway company in South Wales.

On 3 June 1792, the Blaenavon Tramroad was founded to build a mine train of the ironworks in Blaenavon the end of the Monmouthshire Canal in Pontnewydd. The width of the track grooves of the 1795/1796 opened distance was 1.016 meters (3 feet, 4 inches). 1829, the track was rebuilt and the track gauge was now 1.27 meters (4 feet, 2 inches).

On 31 July 1845, the company was restructured as Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company. On 1 July 1852, the railway line opened between Newport and Pontypool and 2 October 1854, the extension on the track bed of the former Blaenavon Tramroad to Blaenavon. 1860 tried the West Midland Railway to lease the company, this failed. However, the Company received the possibility of operational management. 1870 were opened by Cwmfrwdoer and Cwmnantddu two short connections. Another terminal was opened in 1879 after Abersychan and Tylawain.

On August 1, 1875, the Great Western Railway leased the company for 99 years and took over finally on August 1, 1880.
