Mono County, California

Mono County is a county located in the U.S. state of California, on the Nevada border. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bridgeport.

Geography

The County is located in the east of central California under the Sierra Nevada, whose main ridge forms the western boundary of the county. In the east, the state's border with Nevada is also county border. Geographically up on the shares in the Sierra Nevada, it is part of the Basin and Range region. The valleys are dry and not very fertile because of the rain shadow of the Bege. The higher elevations are mostly forested, in Federal ownership and belong to the Inyo National Forest, a national forest. In the center of the county lies the eponymous Mono Lake.

History

The Mono County was formed on April 21, 1861 from parts of Calaveras County, Fresno County and Mariposa County. 1866 parts were annexed by the Mono County Inyo County at the turn.

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,853 people in Mono County. There were 5,137 households and 3,143 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.17 % White, 0.47 % African American, 2.40 % Native American, 1.11 % Asian, 0.09 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 9.51% from other races groups; 2.25% were descended from two or more races. 17.69 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,137 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.60 % were married couples living together, 6.50% had a female householder with no husband. 38.80 % were non-families. 26.60% of all households and 4.30% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 23.00 % under the age of 18, 10.30 % from 18 to 24, 33.40 % from 25 to 44 years, 25.60 % between 45 and 64 years and 7.60 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 121.80 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 126.80 males.

The median income for a household was $ 44,992, and the median income for a family was $ 50,487. Males have a median income of $ 32,600, women $ 26,227. The per capita income was $ 23,422. 11.50% percent of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line. 12.20% of those under age 18 and 1.90% were 65 years or older.

Communities and settlements

Mammoth Lakes is the only independent community in Mono County. The U.S. Census Bureau distinguishes only between the North and the southern part of the county. Other settlements have no political self-government, but are recognized by the Geographic Names Information System:
