Monolithos, Greece

Monolithos (Greek Μονόλιθος ( m. sg. ) ) Is a small town in Gemeindebezeirk Atavyros in the western Greek island and municipality of Rhodes. The name in Greek means about as much as " lonely rock ". The place is known especially for its Hospitaller fortress.

The Byzantines built about 1.5 km southwest of the present-day village a fortress, which was expanded in 1467 by the Hospitallers and restored from 1480 to 1489 by Pierre d' Aubusson. Today, the castle was never taken incidentally serves as a popular photo subject and viewpoint. Within the castle walls there is a chapel of St. Pantaleon.
