Monophthong

A monophthong ( from Greek monos "alone" and phthóngos "Loud" ), a simple vowel is no change in quality ( for example, " u", "a" ) as opposed to diphthongs (eg "au", " ei" ).

Monophthongs can be distinguished in terms of their quantity ( long vowel or short vowel) and in terms of quality ( lip rounding opening degree ). A two-dimensional representation provides the vowel triangle.

The monophthongs are subject to seasonal changes like all sounds, it comes to sound change. Some German monophthongs caused by monophthongization of diphthongs; on the other hand went old monophthongs the system by diphthongisation lost.
