Monroe County (Arkansas)

The Monroe County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Clarendon.

The County is located in east-central Arkansas, is in the southeast about 30 km from the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Tennessee, removed, and has an area of ​​1,609 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water surface. History

The Monroe County was formed on November 2, 1829 from parts of Arkansas County and Phillips County. It was named James Monroe (1758-1831), the fifth President of the United States ( 1817-1825 ).

The first Europeans in the area were in 1799 Antoine Tessier and Joseph de Plasse, fishermen and hunters who lived at the mouth of the Cache River.

When the first settlers arrived here, they found the greater part of the area in front of a natural forest. The non-forested sites were used for grain and bean crops. On trees beech, oak, ash and cypress prevailed. At huntable animals there were turkeys, deer, geese, ducks and bears. Most of the new settlers arrived on the White River.
