Monroe County (Georgia)

The Monroe County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Forsyth, named for John Forsyth, an American politician, Secretary of State and Governor of Georgia.

Geography

The County is located in the central northwestern Georgia and has an area of 1030 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jasper County Jones County, Bibb County, Crawford County, Upson County, Lamar County and Butts County.

History

Monroe County was formed on May 15, 1821 from the land of the Creek Indians. It was named after U.S. President James Monroe.

According to the census of 2000, there were 21,757 people in Monroe County. Of these, 626 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 7,719 households and 6,005 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.12 persons.

26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 to 24, 30.4 percent between 25 and 44, 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 44,195, and the median income for a family $ 51,093. Males have a median income of $ 34,433, women $ 22,146. The per capita income was $ 19,580. 7.3 percent of families and 9.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
