Monroe County (Indiana)

The Monroe County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bloomington.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Indiana and has an area of 1065 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Morgan County, Brown County, Jackson County, Lawrence County, Greene County and Owen County.

History

Monroe County was formed on January 14, 1818 from parts of Orange County. It was named after the reigning at this time, U.S. President James Monroe.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Monroe County 120 563 people in 46 898 households, and 24,715 families. The population density was 118 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 90.83 percent White, 3.00 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 3.37 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.86 percent from other races groups; 1.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.85 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 46 898 households out of which 24.3 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 41.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers and 47.3 percent were non-families. 32.4 percent of all households and 7.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.87.

18.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 27.7 percent between 18 to 24, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44 years. 17.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 9.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 94 men came.

The median income for a household was $ 33,311, and the median income for a family $ 51,058. Males have a median income of $ 34,062, women $ 26,076. The per capita income was $ 18,534. 7.1 percent of families and 18.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
