Geography

The County is located in the extreme southeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the south by Ohio, on the east by the mouth of the Detroit River into Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes. History

The Monroe County was formed in 1817 from parts of Wayne County. It was named after James Monroe (1758-1831), the fifth President of the United States.
