Monroe is a village in Orange County, New York, United States. In 2000, the city had 7780 inhabitants. The place was not named after U.S. President James Monroe, but according to Peter Jay Munroe, a member of the Senate from New York in the early 19th century.

History

The colonization of Monroe began with the arrival of David Smith, born in Brookhaven on Long Iceland, 1747 under Cheese Cocks patent, a 276 acre ( about 110 acres ) acquired large land on which he had six years before built a house.
