Monselice

Monselice is a municipality with 17 561 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Veneto and of the province of Padua.

Geography

Monselice is located about 20 km southeast of Padua on the southern edge of the Euganean Hills ( Euganean Hills ). The modern town lies in a wide valley between the hills of Monte Ricco (312 m) and Rocca (110 m), which are among the Euganean hills.

Neighboring communities of Monselice are: Arquà Petrarca, Baone, Battaglia Terme, Este, Galzignano Terme, Pernumia, Pozzonovo, San Pietro Viminario, Sant Elena, Solesino and Tribano.

Traffic

Monselice has connections to the central locations Padua, Venice and Bologna.

  • The east of the city extending highway Padua -Bologna has its own junction.
  • The Monselice railway station is on the railway line Bologna - Padua. A branch line connects the city with Mantua in Lombardy.
  • The nearest airports are Venice ( VCE) is 60 km away and Bologna ( BLQ) - 100 km.

Demography

History

According to legend, the city was the Trojan hero Opsicella ( a companion of Antenor ) was founded. Archaeological evidence of human settlement there in the area since the Bronze Age.

In Roman times it was known as Mons Silicis, which translates as "hill of the Flint" means, probably because of local trachyte quarries.

The first mention Monselice dates back to 568 and refers to the capture of the city by the Lombards. For a short time the city was under Byzantine rule.

In the age of the municipalities, the city became a self-governing commonwealth. While the political and military conflicts of the 13th century it was ally of the Ghibellines against the Guelphs. The Ghibelline Ezzelino da Romano strengthened the fortifications of the city and made it one of the most important strongholds in the area.

Subsequently, the city fell to the family Carrara ( the lords of Padua ) and was in the 15th century part of the Venetian Republic. 1797 Venetia was ceded to Austria by the Treaty of Campo Formio, but came in the Peace of Pressburg of December 26, 1805, founded by Napoleon Bonaparte Kingdom of Italy. The first Peace of Paris the 30th May 1814 brought Monselice as part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia to Austria back (his king was in personal union of the Emperor of Austria ).

By the Peace of Vienna from October 3, 1866 came Veneto and thus Monselice to the Kingdom of Italy.

The old town is around the Rocca. In the Middle Ages, the Rocca was heavily fortified wall with five rings, some of which are still visible today.

Important points for tourists are the Piazza Mazzini with the medieval Torre civica and the Palazzo del Monte, the Pietà. The Piazza Mazzini is also the starting point for a walk through the Via del Santuario, which leads to the most important sights of the city, including

  • The castle ( Castello Cini or Ca 'Marcello ), which houses one of the most important collections of European arms and armor;
  • Villa Nani
  • The Romanesque church of Santa Giustina of the 12th century;
  • The sanctuary of the seven churches ( Santuario delle Sette Chiese ) with paintings by Jacopo Palma the Younger. Pope Paul V issued a Papal Bull in 1606, which granted the pilgrims who visited the shrine, the same indulgences as those the seven principal churches ( Basiliche ) visited Rome - hence the inscription " Romanis Basilicis Pares " on the portal. The Venetian patrician Pietro Duodo (1554-1610) commissioned Vincenzo Scamozzi with the planning of the sanctuary;

  • The donjon ( Mastio or Torrione ) on the summit of Rocca, a massive tower of massive Trachytquadern from local quarries.

Customs

  • Every Monday a market is held in the main streets.
  • Every year around All Saints' Day, the feast of the patron saints of the city, a traditional fair with the sale of local specialties, amusement park and exhibitions.
  • For several years, will be held in September, the Palio di Monselice, the medieval equestrian competitions is modeled and also includes a medieval parade.
