Mont Ross

The Montross is a volcano on the Kerguelen Islands, a group of islands in the southern Indian Ocean, part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.

The twin peaks of Montross is 1,850 m ( Grand Ross ) and 1,721 m ( Petit Ross) the highest point of the Massif Gallieni on the peninsula in the southern part of the archipelago. The first ascent by Jean Afanassieff in 1975 followed so far only an expedition to the summit.

Was named the mountain after Sir James Clark Ross (1800-1862), an English Antarctic explorer and navigator who visited the islands in 1840 with his ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.
