Mont-Saint-Aignan

Mont -Saint -Aignan is a commune with 19,333 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Seine- Maritime in the Haute-Normandie region. It belongs administratively to the Arrondissement Rouen and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Mont -Saint -Aignan. The inhabitants of Mont-Saint - Aignanais call themselves.

Geography

The city is located north of Rouen above the Seine. The city is divided into the districts of La Vatine, La Village and Saint -André. The neighboring municipalities of Mont-Saint - Aignans are:

  • Notre- Dame-de- Bondeville in the northwest and north,
  • Houppeville in the Northeast,
  • Bois -Guillaume in the East
  • Rouen in the south and
  • Déville -lès -Rouen in the West.

History

During the twelfth century the towns of Saint- Aignan were ( Latinized: Sanctum Anianum ) and Mont- aux- Malades ( Monte Infirmorum ) first mentioned. Henry II of England in 1176 was built the church in honor of Thomas Beckett to redeem himself for his involvement in the murder. Beginning of the 19th century, the community of the earlier parts of Saint- Aignan, Notre -Dame-de - Ville Bonde, Le Houlme Maromme, Saint- Aignan- sur- Ry, Saint -Jean -du- Cardonnay and Saint- Denis- de Bondeville formed.

Since the late 1960s, there is a significant part of the University of Rouen in the city of Mont -Saint -Aignan.
