Montagu Norman, 1st Baron Norman

Montagu Collet Norman, 1st Baron Norman, DSO, (* September 6, 1871; † February 4, 1950 ) was a British banker.

He gained worldwide fame as Governor of the Bank of England ( 1920-1944 ).

Under his leadership, the gold standard was reintroduced in 1925 and 1931 abandoned again in the UK. He played a major role in the founding of the Bank for International Settlements ( BIS) in 1931.

Approach to National Socialism

He was a close friend of Hjalmar Schacht, who organized the industrial input for the Nazis and a member of the Anglo - German Fellowship, which sought an alliance with Nazi Germany. Hitler and Schacht he described as " bastions of civilization in Germany ". Heinrich Brüning expressed against the British politician Robert Vansittart in April 1935:

"I am therefore obliged to confess that my Anglo-German Payments Agreement very distraught. Even more dismayed me the Bank of England policy. If it continues, it will allow the Nazis, rearming in a manner which must inevitably lead to conflict. "
