Montbéliarde cattle

The Montbéliard cattle breed is named after the region of Montbeliard in France.

It is a medium-to large-framed dual-purpose breed (cows 700 kg at about 136 cm at the withers, bulls 1,000 kg, about 148 cm at the withers ), with more emphasis on milk yield. The color of the animal is spotted red and white, with a white head.

The breed originated from the crossroads of local breeds in the Franche- Comté with Bernese Simmental at the beginning of the 18th century. Thereby, the similarity with the Simmental is explainable. 1889, the breed was officially recognized and opened a herd book.

In the 1970s, Red Holstein had been crossed into the breed sporadically. In those days they put a few bulls of the Simmental breed at, which was not very successful usually. In the 1990s, they used the race Montbéliard to the intersection in the Red Danish dairy cattle breeds and Vorderwälder.
