Montclus (Gard)

Montclus is a commune with 139 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes de Valcèzard.

Geography

Montclus located 19 km north- west of Bagnols -sur -Cèze in the Valley of Céze at the Gorges du Céze ( Gorge of Céze ).

History

1957 was found during excavations in the municipality evidence of colonization by sedentary fishermen since the Neolithic period ( 8000-2000 BC).

In the 13th century Montclus is first mentioned in a document. 1263 Abbey Mons Serratus is founded in the hamlet of Les Beaumes. There are still ruins of the abbey, which was used by the Knights Templar as a chapel.

1275 Montclus is called Castrum Montecluso. The name derives from the location of the place was on a hill surrounded by mountains (Latin mons clusus means " trapped mountain").

In the same year, a castle was built, the square donjon is still preserved. It is now privately owned and was founded in 1977 as a monument historique (historic monument) classified.

Economy

Major lines of business of Montclusiens are viticulture, and distillation of lavender and breeding of domestic sheep.
