Monte Cristi Province

Monte Cristi is a province in the north-west of the Dominican Republic. The coast of the province was first sighted on January 4, 1493 by Christopher Columbus. He baptized the distinctive mountain he saw in " Monte Christy ," which still bears the name of El Morro de Montecristi. After only a short-term colonization by the Spaniards, the area sank into insignificance. Geography

The Monte Cristi province is determined by the Cibao Valley and lies at the end of the Carretera Duarte, the main road of Dominican Republic. In the north and east of the province is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.

Economy

The main industry of the province's agriculture and fishing. Mainly bananas, plantains, and rice are grown. Since the northwest end of the Cibao valley is not very high precipitation, the rice fields of the Rio Yaque del Norte are fed.

The province is the main supplier of table salt of the Republic also because of its convenient location.
