The Monte Nuovo in Pozzuoli

The Monte Nuovo (Italian: " New Mountain ") is a situated west of Naples in the municipality of Pozzuoli volcano.

It was created in 1538 when far last volcanic eruption in the Phlegraean Fields. This activity phase, which lasted from September 28 to October 3, 1538, was characterized by pyroclastic flows and through the promotion of large amounts of ash and lapilli. During these eruptions was an adjoining Maar - Lago d' Averno - partially buried and its connection closed to the sea.

The Monte Nuovo is 133 meters high, the diameter of its crater rim is about 400 meters, that of the volcano base around 1200 meters. The slopes of Monte Nuovo are covered with the typical Mediterranean scrub vegetation, some they are now cultivated.
