Subasio

The Subasio is a mountain of the Apennines mountain range in central Italy, in Umbria.

Geography

The Subasio is located in the mountain chain of the Apennines umbro marchigiano above the town of Assisi, in the vicinity of the town of Spello and Nocera Umbra, which are connected with Assisi about the Parco del Monte Subasio which extends in the valley of the Valle Umbra. To Comunità montana Subasio also includes the villages of Bastia Umbra, Torgiano and Valtopina.

The summit reaches a height of about 1290 m slm

History

The town of Assisi has been completely built from the white-pink stones of the mountain with its forests also supplied the inhabitants wood. The source Fontemaggio, which rises in the mountains, supplied in Roman times the city with drinking water.

Nature

There is a summit which is mostly flat and characterized by karst phenomena. For this reason it differs from the steep slopes to the east. The trees of the Subasio can be divided into three zones: the first is characterized by olive trees, whose cultivation stretches of Assisi from Spello on the one side and from Costa di Trex until after Armenzano and San Giovanni on the other. Parco del Monte Subasio
