Montecatini Terme

Montecatini Terme is a town and municipality in the province of Pistoia Italian with 19,441 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) and is located in Tuscany about halfway between Florence and Pisa.

Center of the municipality is the eponymous spa town, one of the largest and most famous spas in Italy. Montecatini is also considered a center of Art Nouveau architecture. In Montecatini Terme there are over 200 hotels of all categories.

The municipality also includes the mountain village of Montecatini Alto, the original settlement core is connected to the capital by the Funicular di Montecatini Terme, one of the oldest still in operation funiculars Italy.

Demography

Between 1991 and 2001, the population fell from 20,653 to 19,900. This corresponds to a percentage decrease of 3.8 percent. From 1900 to 1980, the population grew from 3,000 to 20,000.

Attractions

  • In the town hall have the colonnades and the vault frescoes of the artist Galileo Chini.
  • Approximately 1.5 kilometers north of the town there is a stalactite cave Grotta Maona; it is open to visitors from 1 April to 15 October.
  • To place a part of a privately operated, driven by ballast water, funicular, which is identical to the Nerobergbahn in Wiesbaden ( Phoenix, July 21, 2013, 9:45 clock ).

Traffic

At the northeastern end of the spa park of Montecatini Terme the valley station of the funicular, which leads up to the original Montecatini Alto is located. From the bus station and a local van leaves every hour on the mountain village.
