Montelbaanstoren

Montelbaanstoren is a historical tower in Amsterdam. It was in 1516, built on the Oudeschansgracht, which is also called Montelbaansgracht and fulfilled in the 16th century as part of the medieval city wall initially the function of Waiting tower over the port facilities.

From the year 1606 the tower for its original purpose has not been used and received a designed by the architect Hendrick de Keyser wood top, including a clock with striking mechanism. Since then the tower has a height of 48 meters.

In the vernacular, he is nicknamed Malle Jaap, which is due to the inaccuracy of the clock and its breakdown in the 17th century. Since the tower from 1878 to 2006 the municipality was under the water level regulation in the canals, he was not open to the public. Since 2010, the tower is home to the Stichting Secret Garden.

The Dutch painter Rembrandt lived a long time in the vicinity of the tower and drew him several times without his top.
