Montelupo Fiorentino

Montelupo Fiorentino (usually only Montelupo ) is a municipality with 13.746 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 25 km ². It is located about 20 km west of Florence, at the mouth of the Pesa into the Arno.

The districts include Ambrogiana, Botinaccio, Camaioni, Citerna, Erta, Fibbiana, La Torre, Pulica, Samminiatello, Sammontana, San Quirico and Turbone.

The neighboring municipalities are Capraia e Limite, Carmignano (PO ), Empoli, Lastra a Signa and Montespertoli.

History

Traces of human habitation of the area there is from the Old Stone Age and the time of the Etruscans. Under the name mansio ad Arnum the place in the Tabula Peutingeriana is mentioned. At the beginning of the 13th century, the city of Florence was conquered and destroyed. At the same place a castle was built by the county of Florence. In 1336 the congregation built the city walls and was awarded in 1416 the Statute Podesteria. Since the 15th century Montelupo is known for its pottery.
