Montenois

Montenois is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Montenois is located on 410 m, about 10 km west of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village stretches along the edge of a high plateau in the rolling countryside north of Doubstals, northeast of Mont Truchot.

The area of ​​8.03 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the undulating countryside north of Doubstals. The central part of the area is occupied by the plateau of Montenois, which is on average 400 m. It has a width of one kilometer and a length of four kilometers and is mainly consisted of arable and meadow land. In the south the plateau is of the forest heights of the Bois du Cujot (up to 440 m) and Mont Truchot ( 469 m the highest elevation of Montenois ), flanked to the west by the Bois du Combollet (462 m). To the north- east passes over a ground level to about 40 m deeper level of Arcey. The whole area shows no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground of the Causse.

Neighboring communities of Montenois are Arcey in the north, Sainte -Marie in the east, Lougres, Beutal and Bretigney in the south and Faimbe and Onan in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Montenois belonged to the rule Granges, which came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. During the Second World War was in Montenois a significant resistance cell of the Resistance. Therefore, 16 villagers were executed by the German occupying forces, as recalled by a cross. Today Montenois is part of the municipal association Communauté de communes des Trois Cantons.

Population

With 1536 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Montenois one of the smaller communities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the area of ​​330-430 people, a strong population growth has been recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the population has almost quadrupled.

Economy and infrastructure
