Montereale, Abruzzo

Monte Reale is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2768 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of L' Aquila in the Abruzzo region. The community is located about 30 kilometers northeast of L' Aquila on Aterno and directly borders the province of Rimini. Monte Real is part of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga and belongs to the Comunità Montana Amiternina.

History

The settlement Monte Reale goes back to the city's founding Maronea the Pelasgians, which was destroyed 550 AD. Due to the Lombards a new settlement was built in the 6th century still, as it was known in the Middle Ages as Monte Regalis. 1703, an earthquake destroyed Monte Reale and called to 800 victims. Even the earthquake of 2009 led to numerous damages in the community.
