Monterey ( for Konigsberg Spanish) is a coastal town in Monterey County in the U.S. state of California, United States, with about 27,800 inhabitants (as of 2010 census ). The metropolitan area has a size of 30.4 square kilometers and is located on Highway 1 between San Francisco ( 185 km north ) and Los Angeles ( about 560 kilometers to the south ). The city is located on a peninsula on the southern end of Monterey Bay.

History

In 1602, the Bay of Sebastián Vizcaíno was explored, who in honor of the Count of Monte Rey, the viceroy of New Spain, named. The June 3, 1770 is regarded as the founding date of the city. The first buildings were the Presidio Military Base and Mission St. Charles Borromeo. In 1776, Monterey became the capital of Alta California and Baja California and was a short time also the capital of the young U.S. state of California.

Monterey served as the backdrop of some of the novels of John Steinbeck, including Tortilla Flat (1935 ) and The Cannery ( Cannery Row, 1945).

In Monterey County Fairground found 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, one of the most important concerts of rock music history ( as a film Monterey Pop, filmmaker DA Pennebaker ). Since 1958, the Monterey Jazz Festival is held.

Monterey is home to the Monterey Peninsula College (1947 ), the Naval Postgraduate School ( 1947), an officer's school, which was also attended by numerous American astronauts, the Defense Language Institute, a school for the military, and the Monterey Institute of International Studies ( 1955).

A world-famous institution is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is located at the western end of Cannery Row.

On the outskirts of Monterey, the 17- Mile Drive, a famous tourist road begins.
