Monteros

Monteros is the capital of the department of Monteros in the province Tucumán in northwestern Argentina. It lies at an altitude of 532 meters, surrounded by four rivers and has 23,771 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ). According to current estimates in the year 2006, the population already exceeds the 28,000 mark. The inhabitants of Monteros are commonly called " Monterizos ".

Monteros is located 53 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital San Miguel de Tucumán. Near Monteros is the community Acheral, which is considered the gateway to the Calchaquíes.

Climate

The average temperature in summer is 35 degrees Celsius in winter and 10 degrees Celsius with peak temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius and -3 degrees Celsius.

History

Monteros was founded in 1754 and received city rights in 1868. Engine of urban development was the cultivation of sugarcane. In 1925, Monteros 5,000 inhabitants, had paved roads, a railway station, banks, post office, telegraph office and a library of 4,500 volumes.

Economy

The pillars of the local economy is the sugar industry. The Ingenio Ñuñorco, founded in 1926, is the most important industrial company in the city. The zone around Monteros is dedicated to the cultivation of sugar cane, lemons, blueberries, strawberries and potatoes.

Culture

Monteros known as La Fortaleza del folklore (Fortress of folklore ) and as Capital Nacional de la Poesía (National Capital of poetry ) in Argentina. Monteros gained a reputation as a culturally open-minded city and brought writers like Maximiliano Alurralde Márquez, Manuel Julio Ardiles Gray Aldonate and forth. To the intellectual center, the library Mitre, a facility of the Club Social Monteros developed from 1940 onwards. 1945, the daily newspaper Tucumanía is founded by Dionisio J. Campos and Silvio Manservigi.

Sports

  • Volleyball: The Social Club Monteros was Argentine champion in volleyball.
  • Football: Club Atlético Ñuñorco regarded as the best football club in the city. Its name commemorates the eponymous mountain which is visible from the village.
