Monterosso is the northernmost of the five villages, all located on a 12 km long coastal strip.

In a storm in October 2011, the city suffered from severe devastation caused by floods.

Geography

Monterosso stretches for about 1.5 kilometers and is divided into two parts: the small old town is separated from the newer quarters Fegina by a rock rising from the sea, on which the distinctive watchtower Torre Aurora from the 16th century rises. Through the rocks leads a 100 m long pedestrian tunnel.

Due to its location between steep slopes, where olives and wine are grown, the beaches of the village are quite small, but the Cinque Terre like to visit both of Italians and foreign day-trippers (especially Americans ) for hiking and swimming. Hiking trails lead to the neighboring Vernazza, up the slope after Soviore or kapähnlichen Porto Roca and on to Levanto. A special feature of the village is the Gigante, a carved out of the rock stone figure that once held a dance terrace and 1966 partially damaged in a storm surge.
