Monterrico (Guatemala)

Geography

Monterrico is situated south of the highlands of Guatemala in the flat coastal plain, which is partly influenced by mangrove swamps and lagoons. A navigable canal was built in the 20th century, parallel to the beach to the state border with El Salvador. He serves in part of the drainage of the lowlands and to attract new arable land.

Monterrico is known for its elongated beaches of black volcanic ash and therefore a popular spot for weekend trips of residents of Guatemala (City), the capital of the country. For foreign tourists, the place in recent years has become attractive because of the relaxed atmosphere, the beaches and the surf at the beach.

Sea ​​turtles

During the months of August to November, four different species of sea turtles come to the beaches there to lay their eggs in the sand.
