Montes Apenninus

The Montes Apenninus are the mightiest mountains on the moon. The mountain is part of the partial crater wall to the basin of the Mare Imbrium and is located south of the well arranged Montes Alpes. It has a length of around 600 km and rises in places over 5000 m.

The lunar Apennines was named by Hevelius after the Apennines in Italy. Its southerly portion is flanked by Mare Vaporum in northwestern Mare Imbrium and from the southeast. Thus, similar to the geographical breakdown of the earthly Apennines, surrounded by the Adriatic Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Looking at the Moon Apennines is striking that it has numerous impact craters.
