Montevarchi

Montevarchi is a town with 24 202 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Arezzo ( Tuscany).

Geography

Montevarchi is located in the upper Arno valley on the left bank of the river. In the municipality in levans the Ambra flows to the Arno. The municipality covers the valley floor, where the capital is located, and a hilly part between the Arno and the Sienese Chianti area.

The municipality consists of the villages ( Frazioni ) Caposelvi, levans, Levanella, Mercatale Valdarno, Moncioni, Rendola, Ricasoli and Ventena.

The neighboring municipalities are Bucine, Cavriglia, Gaiole in Chianti ( SI), Pergine Valdarno and San Giovanni Valdarno and Terra Bracciolini.

History

On one of these hills, where there was a Capuchin monastery until 2002, stood up before the first millennium, the castle of Montevarchi. From the Market Place, where the inhabitants of the fort inaccessible met with merchants, the same town developed in the 12th century. The castle belonged to the Guidi to 1273, when it finally came to Florence. In the boundary layer between the territories of Arezzo and Florence Montevarchi was repeatedly attacked and devastated, especially in 1287 when fleeing from Arezzo Ghibellines were there attacked by their Ghibelline compatriots. 1338 Montevarchi was surrounded by a city wall and received an administrative autonomy. Politically, it suffered the vicissitudes of the forming around Florence Tuscan State. During this time there was a thriving agricultural market, as it had been so once established, has also become a craft center specializing in the production of silk and wool. Later it was slammed as part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany the forming province of Arezzo. After Italian unification, it experienced together with the surrounding communities an enormous industrial expansion through the use of brown coal deposits in the area. Montevarchi dedicated to the production of felt, especially hats. Although production-related energy supplies so today is no longer a major location advantage and headgear are not as common as in the 30s, the production of fashion products is still one of the main industries of the city.

Festivals

The feast of the patron saint of the city of St. Lawrence, will be held on August 10.

On the first Sunday of September, we will hold the feast of forgiveness and on the following Monday a market.
