Montevideo is a small town ( with a status of "City" ) and the administrative seat of Chippewa County in the central south-west of the U.S. State of Minnesota. In 2010, Montevideo had 5383 inhabitants.

Montevideo has four schools, a hospital and several banks. In total, there are twelve parks in Montevideo. Several times a year are held festivals such as the "Fiesta Days". There are also hunting and recreational opportunities.

Since 1949 there is a twinning with the same Uruguayan capital Montevideo. On the part of the Uruguayan 's sister city received the American small town, a statue of the Uruguayan national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas ' which is now placed in the square on Main Street.

Geography

Montevideo is located about 200 kilometers west of Minneapolis. The city is located at the mouth of the Chippewa River in the Minnesota River and is situated at the crossroads of U.S. Highways 59 and 212, as well as State Routes 7 and 29

Around the city there are smaller lakes. The environment consists of farmland and prairies, which are interrupted by river valleys and low hills.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8 km ², of which 11.6 km ² of land and 0.1 km ² ( = 1.10% ) consist of waters.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Montevideo 5383 people in 2326 households. The population density was 464.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 2326 households lived statistically 2.25 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 92.0 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.7 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and 4.6 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races.
