Montezuma County, Colorado

The Montezuma County is a county located in the state of Colorado and is one of the Four Corners. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Cortez.

Geography

The County in the extreme southwestern Colorado, on the south by New Mexico, on the west by Utah and has an area of ​​5284 square kilometers. Of these, 9 square kilometers of water, the largest lake in the County is the McPhee Reservoir. The county is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dolores County, La Plata County, San Juan County ( New Mexico) and San Juan County ( Utah).

In Montezuma County is also the Mesa Verde National Park, which contains many archaeological sites. The county is also known for the Navajo Nation, the largest Indian reservation in the United States.

History

Montezuma County has been inhabited for about 600 and in 1100 had an estimated population of 100,000, four times its current population. Between 1200 and 1300, however, most of the settlements had to be abandoned, and the area was inhabited by nomads, until a new settlement occurred around 1870. The Montezuma County was founded in April 1889 from the western part of La Plata County.
