Montfavergier

Montfavergier was until December 31, 2008, a municipality in the district Franches- Montagnes in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

She has merged with effect from 1 January 2009 the municipality of Montfaucon Montfaucon.

Geography

Montfavergier is located on 801 m above sea level. M., 9 km north-east of the district municipal seat Saignelégier (air line). The farming village extends on a terrace of the southern side of the valley of the Doubs River, approximately 350 m above the valley floor, on the northeast edge of the Freiberg mountains (French Freiberge ).

The area of ​​3.5 km ² large former municipal area includes a portion of the upper right Talhangs of the Doubs. The slope is partly covered with forest, on the less steeply sloping ground with meadows and pastures. To the south, the municipality's area extended over the Jura height of Les Sairains that with 1'030 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Montfavergier represented, except for the south adjoining areas of the Jura plateau. From the municipality surface 1997 2 % related to settlements, 44 % of forest and woody plants and 54% to agriculture.

To Montfavergier belonged to the hamlet of Les Sairains (940 m above sea level. M. ) on the south, adjoining the Doubs Jura ridge as well as several individual farms. Neighboring communities of Montfavergier were Soubey, Epiquerez, Saint- Brais, Montfaucon and Les Enfers.

Population

With 38 inhabitants ( end of 2007) Montfavergier was the smallest municipality in the canton of Jura. Of the 38 residents are 33 ( 86.7 %), French-speaking and 5 ( 13.3 %) in German (as of 2000). The population of Montfavergier amounted in 1870 to 181 inhabitants. Since then, the population has declined due to high levels of emigration by about 80%.

Economy

Montfavergier is a strong dominantly agricultural village with dairy farming and cattle breeding. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village. Employed workers who do not work in agriculture must therefore take longer commutes in purchasing. The canton Jura boasts fiscal policy in Switzerland to the highest tax rate.

Traffic

The former municipality is located north of the main road from Delémont to La Chaux -de-Fonds and can be reached by a 2 km long access road. Montfavergier is not connected to public transport.

History

His first mentioned in 1338 as the village of Mons fabrorum that from the Latin word faber ( blacksmith, in French forgeron ) is derived. It belonged to the manor free mountains covered by the prince-bishops of Basel. Between 1793 and 1815 Montfavergier belonged to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura. Montfavergier does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Saint- Brais. On 12 June 2007 the voters of Montfavergier voted by a slim majority (10 yes- no votes against 9 ) for fusion with Montfaucon to be legally binding on 1 January 2009.
