Montgomery County (Iowa)

The Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 10,740 inhabitants and a population density of 9.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Red Oak.

Geography

The County is located in southwest Iowa, about 40 miles from Nebraska and south 40 km to the west from Missouri and has an area of 1,100 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The area of present-day Montgomery County was purchased in 1846 by the Potawatomi Indian tribe and was then part of the Potawatami County. 1851 spun off the Montgomery County from this, which was named after Richard Montgomery ( 1738-1775 ), a general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, who fell at the Battle of Quebec in 1775.

1853 elections were first held in the county, but this was initially co-managed by Adams County. A separate administrative headquarters was established, which was in the middle of the county and was named after the city of Frankfort, Kentucky.

1857 as the first- judicial and administrative building was constructed. It was a simple wooden house of 12 by 6 meters. After a competition between Frankfort and Red Oak, the seat was moved to Red Oak. The old Court House was transported by ox cart from Frankfort to Red Oak.

The building was increasing in size no longer cope with increasing workloads. It took place in 1873 and 1883 two failed attempts to erect a new building there. Only in 1889 it was decided to erect a new building that could be passed a year later his destiny and still is in operation. The building of sandstone and red brick was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

1984, the building has been modernized; were fitted and created for disabled access lifts.
