Montgomery County (Maryland)

The Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Rockville.

The Montgomery County is part of the metropolitan area around the U.S. capital Washington, DC.

Geography

The county forms the northern suburban area of the U.S. federal capital of Washington, and is bounded on the southwest by the Potomac River, which forms the border with Virginia.

The Montgomery County has an area of 1,313 square kilometers; including 30 square kilometers (2.29 percent) of water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Montgomery County was formed in 1776 from parts of Frederick, Prince George's and Charles County. It was named after Richard Montgomery (1738-1775), a general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, which was the first and highest-ranking general in the Battle of Quebec.

As the administrative center a place was selected in the middle of the county from which evolved the modern city Rockville.

1791 were parts of Montgomery County, including the former city of Georgetown spun off to form together with parts of neighboring counties in Maryland and Virginia, the newly formed District of Columbia.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Montgomery County 971 777 people in 344 099 households. The population density was 757.4 inhabitants per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 57.5 percent white, 17.2 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 14.0 percent of Asians and other ethnic groups; 4.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 17.0 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 344 099 households lived statistically 2.72 per person.

24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 63.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 12.3 percent were 65 years or older. 51.5 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 93,774. The per capita income was $ 46,122. 6.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
