Montefiascone on the caldera on the southeastern edge of the Monti Volsini

The Volsiner Mountains (Italian Monti Volsini ) are a mountain range on the border of the Italian regions of Lazio, Tuscany and Umbria. They are located about 100 km north of Rome and 100 km south of Siena, enclose the lake Bolsena.

The mountain is named after the Etruscan town Volsinii.

The Volsiner mountains formed by the volcanic activity of Apparato vulcanico Vulsinio which began about 600,000 years ago. Eruptions took place in the volcanic craters of Montefiascone, Latera, Lamone and Mezzano lake. Lake Bolsena is a caldera created by the collapse of a magma chamber.

From volcanic activity still bear witness to numerous hot sulfur springs in the vicinity of the central mountain range. The houses in the communities near the Volsiner mountains are built largely with building tuff.
