Monticello is a small town in Piatt County in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the census of 2000 Monticello had 5,138 inhabitants. The city is the county seat ( county seat ).

Geography

After entering the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.0 square miles, equivalent to ( 7.7 km ²).

Attractions

One attraction is the city immediately adjacent to Robert Allerton Park, it is also home to a conference center at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. The park is named after a wealthy private citizen who had him create and adorned with statues. The most famous statue is located in the center of the park "Sun Singer".

History

The first settlers in Monticello was George Haworth in 1822, who worked as a liaison to local Indian tribes. However, the beginning of permanent settlement falls on the year 1829 and goes back to James A. Piatt, after the later the county was named.

In 1837, came the emergence of the city proper. Abraham Marquiss, William Barnes, James McReynolds, and James A. Piatt Jr. founded a corporation and purchased land from James A. Piatt. Under the proposal, McReynolds ' according to which the city was named after the country estate of Thomas Jefferson on the name Monticello. The official founding date of the city is July 1, 1837, the foundation celebrations were taking place until three days later.
