Montmorency County, Michigan

Montmorency County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Atlanta.

Geography

The County is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is in the east about 45 miles from Lake Huron, one of the five great lakes, distance and has an area of 1457 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Presque Isle County, Alpena County, Oscoda County, Otsego County and Cheboygan County.

History

Montmorency County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. Until 1843 it was called Cheonoquet County. It was named after the French noble family of Montmorency.
