Montonico Bianco

Montonico Bianco is a white grape variety from Italy, which is grown mainly in the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region. In addition, their cultivation in the provinces of Macerata, Frosinone, Catania, Ragusa and Siracusa is recommended. Admitted she is also in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno, Naples, Salerno, Chieti, Pescara, Foggia, Cosenza and Reggio di Calabria. In the 1990s, an area under vines of 1,117 hectares was charged.

The species is often confused with the Montonico bianco della Calabria.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy and white wool of white- greenish color. The young leaves are hairy and spinnwebig colored pale green on the underside of leaves.
  • The medium to large leaves are indented five lobes and strong. The petiole is narrow lyre -shaped open or almost closed. The sheet is cut unevenly. The lower leaf surface is nearly hairless
  • The drum-shaped cluster is large and dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are medium to large in size and of a yellowish color. The yellow berries are provided with maroon stripes.

Montonico Bianco matures almost 40 days after the Chasselas. It is thus considered very late maturing. The powerfully built strain grew provides steady returns.

It is not very susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew. However, it tends in wet years due to their Dichtbeerigkeit to raw rot.
