Montorio al Vomano

Montorio al Vomano is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 8236 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region. The community is located about 10 kilometers south of Teramo in the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga ( National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga ). The municipality belongs to the Comunità Montana Gran Sasso. Here the Vomano flows.

History

The community name derives from the Mons Aureus (Golden mountain). A former Greek settlement was probably Beregra or Beretra. 1173 the present settlement is first mentioned.

The municipality is situated on the Strada Statale 80 del Gran Sasso, which further leads to the Adriatic Teramo L'Aquila and direction. The Strada Statale 150 della Valle del Vomano comes from Roseto degli Abruzzi and ends here. The former Strada Statale 491 di Isola del Gran Sasso also ends here.

Community partnership

Montorio al Vomano maintains since 2000 a domestic partnership with the Italian city in the province of Latina Aprilia.
