Montreuil-sur-Ille

Montreuil- sur- Ille is a commune with 2112 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ille -et -Vilaine in the Brittany region.

Geography

Montreuil- sur- Ille is located about 30 kilometers north of Rennes, capital of Brittany. The city is crossed by the river Ille, who is from here part of the Canal d' Ille -et -Rance. The canalized Ille is navigable from here to Rennes. If you follow the channel in the other direction, one reaches the English Channel at Saint- Malo. The channel today but more important for tourism.

History

The name of the village comes from the Latin Monasteriolum Sulerinsulam, making a small monastery was referred to the Ille. In the 12th century the town developed around this monastery, from which can be found no trace today. By the construction of the Canal d' Ille -et -Rance and later a parallel railway line, the establishment of industries was favored in the 19th century: Gerbstofffabrik, tannery, dairy industry, etc.
