Monulph

Monulphus (also Monulf, Monulfus, Mondolf, Mondolphus ) ( † July 16 in Maastricht 599 ) was bishop of Tongeren -Maastricht and is revered as a saint.

Life

Monulphus was the first bishop of Tongeren -Maastricht, the revered his predecessor Servatius. The chapel over the grave of Servatius had now expired. Therefore, he had built in Maastricht 560-580 a church ( templum magnum ) for Servatius Servatius Church instead of the later. He had converted the bones solemnly into the new house of worship. There is the theory that he transferred the seat of the Bishopric of Tongeren to Maastricht. The construction of a chapel in Liege and other buildings, he is credited. After his death he was buried in the church built by him Servatius in Maastricht.

It was 1039 in the presence of Emperor Henry III. raised to the saints. With him is mostly worshiped his successor Gondulphus. The sarcophagus of Monulphus was worshiped in the middle of the church. His feast day is July 16. Were particularly revered Gondulphus and Monulphus in Aachen.
