Moody County, South Dakota

Moody County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. In 2010, the County had 6486 inhabitants and a population density of 4.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The the county seat ( county seat ) is in Flandreau.

Within the Moody County is the Flandreau Reservation of the Mdewakanton, a subgroup of the Sioux.

Geography

The County is located in eastern South Dakota on the border with Minnesota to about 500 m. It has an area of 1350 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surfaces. History

The Moody County was formed in 1873. It was named after Colonel Gideon C. Moody, a politician, 1878-1883 Judge of the Supreme Court of South Dakota and 1889-1891 U.S. Senator. 1865 Congress approved $ 25,000 for the construction of a road from Sioux City to Fort Randall on Elk Point, Vermillion and Yankton.
